Following the National Award (Swarna Kamal) honor for my debut film “Deool,” I worked on a few films in India. In 2024, I began contemplating the idea of establishing a Marathi film industry presence in North America. That thought led to the founding of the North American Film Association (NAFA) with three core objectives: film production, distribution, and festivals.
With support from 12 executive council members, we began strategizing. The goal was to bring together talented artists, directors, choreographers, singers, poets, cinematographers, editors, and create Marathi films, web series, and documentaries on local North American themes.
In a short time, NAFA crossed 1,000 members. Many were active in theater and stage performances. To nurture this talent, we held a filmmaking workshop by National Award-winning director Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni, and a dubbing symposium with Prasad Phanse. We also launched a “Masterclass Series” to connect with seasoned filmmakers, featuring Dr. Mohan Agashe, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Umesh Kulkarni, Dr. Salil Kulkarni, Sachin Khedekar, and Abhijeet Deshpande.
We proposed the creation of three short films, which received an enthusiastic response. Since a compelling story is the soul of any film, we received over 65 story submissions from our members—each rooted in North American contexts. A 14-member panel selected 5 stories, and we began seeking co-producers. Seventeen co-producers emerged from among our members. We produced three short films: “Nirmalya,” “Pāyraw,” and “Dear Pr.” We also secured a collaboration agreement with the Pune International Film Festival (PIFF).
📽️ In July 2024, we organized North America’s first-ever Marathi Film Festival. Renowned artists from India participated, including Sachin Pilgaonkar, Supriya, Nivedita Joshi, Dr. Jabbar Patel, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Subodh Bhave, Prasad Oak, Mahesh and Medha Manjrekar, Dr. Salil Kulkarni, Mrinal Kulkarni, Ashwini Bhave, and Umesh Kulkarni. The grand festival included feature films, world premieres, short films, panel discussions, red carpet events, masterclasses, awards, and new film reviews, making it an unforgettable celebration. The event was a complete sell-out.
🎟️ Recognizing the need to revamp Marathi film distribution in the U.S., we began screenings with help from Anup Nimkar and theaters like Cinélounge, Cinemark, Regal, and AMC. Sachin Pilgaonkar’s “Navra Majha Navsacha – 2” had over 50 screenings, followed by 100+ screenings of the classic film “Sangeet Manapman.” Today, over 12 producers distribute their films through NAFA. NAFA’s three short films were also showcased at PIFF 2025, and the organization has played a pivotal role in bringing North American talent to global attention.

“देऊळ” या माझ्या पहिल्या चित्रपटाला सुवर्णकमळ नॅशनल अवॉर्ड नि सन्मानित केल्यानंतर काही चित्रपट मी भारतात केले. २०२४ मध्ये मनात एक कल्पना घोळत होती कि मराठी चित्रपट सृष्टी नॉर्थ अमेरिकेत स्थापन करावी. म्हणून “नॉर्थ अमेरिकन फिल्म असोसिएशन (नाफा) ची स्थापना केली. चित्रपट निर्मिती, चित्रपट वितरण आणि चित्रपट महोत्सव असे ३ मुख्य हेतू ठरले. कॅलिफोर्निया येथील रिया ठोसर आणि बोस्टन च्या अरुंधती दात्ये च्या मदतीने आखणी सुरु केली. अनेक गुणी कलावंत, दिग्दर्शक, नृत्य दिग्दर्शक, गायक, कवी, सिनेमॅटोग्राफेर्स, संकलक आदींना घेऊन इथल्याच विविध विषयांवर मराठी चित्रपट, वेब सेरीज, डॉक्यूमेंटरी, अशा उत्तम कलाकृती तयार कराव्यात. अल्पावधीतच १००० हुन अधिक मेंबर्स मिळाले. बरेच मेंबर्स नाटक आणि स्टेज परफॉर्मन्सस करत होते. त्यांच्या साठी नॅशनल अवॉर्ड विंनिंग दिग्दर्शक, उमेश विनायक कुलकर्णी यांचा फिल्म मेकिंग कार्यशाळा, प्रसाद फणसे च्या मदतीने डबिंग चा परिसंवाद आयोजित केला. त्याच बरोबरीने अनुभवी व नावाजलेल्या फिल्म मेकर्स बरोबर संवाद स्थापण्यासाठी ” मास्टरक्लास series” ची सुरवात केली. यात, Dr. मोहन आगाशे, दिलीप प्रभावळकर, उमेश कुलकर्णी, Dr. सलील कुलकर्णी, सचिन खेडेकर, अभिजित देशपांडे यांचे सेमिनार्स झाले. ३ शॉर्ट फिल्म्स च्या निर्मिती चे ध्येय सर्व मेंबर्स समोर मांडले. त्याला भरघोस प्रतिसाद मिळाला. चित्रपटाची पहिली गरज उत्तम कथा. ६५ हुन अधिक कथा आमच्या मेम्बर्सनी आम्हाला पाठवल्या. नॉर्थ अमेरिकेशी संदर्भ प्रस्थापित करण्याऱ्या गोष्टी आहेत या सगळ्या. त्यातून ५ कथा निवडण्यासाठी १४ मेंबर्स चे एक पॅनल स्थापले. त्याच बरोबर को-प्रोड्युसर चा शोध सुरु केला. आपलच्याच मेंबर्स मधून १७ को-प्रोड्युसर्स पुढे आले. “निर्माल्य”, “पायरव” आणि “डिअर प्र” या शॉर्ट फिल्म्स ची निर्मिती केली. पुणे इंटरनॅशनल फिल्म फेस्टिवल (पिफ) बरोबर सहकार्य-करार झाला.
जुलै २०२४ रोजी नॉर्थ अमेरिकेत पहिला मराठी चित्रपट महोत्सव आयोजित केला. याला भारतातून अनेक नामवंत कलाकारांनी हजेरी लावली. सचिन पिळगावकर, सुप्रिया, निवेदिता जोशी, डॉ जब्बार पटेल, दिलीप प्रभावळकर, सुबोध भावे, प्रसाद ओक, महेश आणि मेधा मांजरेकर, डॉ. सलील कुलकर्णी, मृणाल कुलकर्णी, अश्विनी भावे, उमेश कुलकर्णी स्वतः उपस्थित राहिले. न भूतो अश्या पद्धतीने केलेला उत्सव सर्वाना भावून गेला. अनेक चित्रपट, वर्ल्ड प्रीमियर, शॉर्ट फिल्म्स, पॅनल डिस्कशन, रेड कार्पेट ,मास्टर क्लासेस, अवॉर्ड्स, नवीन चित्रपट समीक्षा आदींनी या महोत्सवाला सोनेरी झलक लावली. चित्रपट महोत्सव हाऊसफुल झाला.
मराठी चित्रपट वितरण पद्धती बदलण्याची अमेरिकेत गरज होती. त्यासाठी, अनूप निमकर च्या मदतीने सिनेलाऊंज, सिनेमार्क, रिगल, AMC अश्या चित्रपट गृहांच्या मदतीने चित्रपट वितरणाला सुरवात केली. सचिन पिळगावकर यांचा “नवरा माझा नवसाचा – २” चे पन्नासहून अधिक शोज झाले. त्यानंतर, संगीत मानापमान चित्रपटाचे वितरण हक्क घेतल्यानंतर १०० हुन अधिक शोज केले. आता १२ हुन अधिक निर्माते त्यांचे चित्रपट “नाफा” च्या माध्यमातून वितरित करत आहेत. “नाफा” च्या तिन्ही शॉर्ट फिल्म्स २०२५ मध्ये पिफ च्या महोत्सवात दाखवण्यात आल्या. अमेरिकेतील कलावंतांना त्यांची कला जगापुढे घेऊन जाण्यात “नाफा” चा सिंहांचा वाटा ठरला.
“नाफा” आता ५०१ क ३ म्हणजे नॉन-प्रॉफिट संस्था आहे. त्याच्या माध्यमातून चित्रपट निर्मिती, चित्रपट वितरण आणि चित्रपट महोत्सव असे तीन उपक्रम दर वर्षी केले जातात. आपण सगळ्यांनी दिलेल्या सहकार्य बद्दल आपले मनापासून आभार !!
Through the magic of storytelling on the silver screen, we envision a festival that fosters understanding, empathy, and inspiration. It will be a platform where emerging talents from North America shine alongside seasoned maestros, where innovation meets tradition, and where the power of cinema is harnessed to provoke meaningful conversations on social, cultural, and global issues.
